A popular question in any sporting goods shop is - “What badminton racquets do the professional players use?” And the best answer I can give you is - “All of them.” While there all certain things that all the pros look for in a racquet, there is no one racquet that all professional players prefer. Each player has his or her own style and, beyond the basics, each one looks for different qualities in a racquet. What works well for one player may be a total dud for the next. Keeping in mind, too, that a lot of the success depends not so much on the racquet but the physical attributes of the player, here are some of the things that the pros look for when choosing a racquet.
Control - If you're looking for a racquet the will give you good control, you will want to choose a lighter weight badminton racquet. Unstrung, the racquet should be between 85 and 90 grams, provided the balance point is between 275mm and 280mm. If you're going to wrap the grip so it's larger, that will add to the weight of the racquet, so be sure to take that into consideration.
If you want a racquet for power – Look for heavier weight racquets, between 88 and 92 grams with a balance point of 285 mm to 295 mm. A heavier weight racquet will have less shock and vibration when hitting the shuttle.
Power plus control - Choose a racquet that has a more flexible shaft if you want a combination of power and control. You can adjust the weight and balance of any racquet for greater control but especially if you're a beginner player you'll get more power if you have a more flexible shaft on your racquet.
If you should happen to find a wooden racquet while you're shopping, do not buy it. Aluminum, carbon fiber, and steel racquets are lighter than wood and make for a much faster game, so if you're playing with a wood racquet, you'd be just as well off to simply stand there and watch the birdies go by.
